Get Your Storage Facility Organized This Spring!

Posted on: 19 March 2016

Spring is almost here and it's time to get your storage unit organized! Using proper storage and organizational techniques in your storage unit can help you make the most efficient use of your storage space. By getting organized, you also make it easier to find what you need when it's time to retrieve items from your unit. The following tips will help you manage your storage unit organization project.

Switch to Plastic Storage Bins

A good way to organize your storage unit is to remove all stored items from cardboard boxes and place them into plastic stackable bins. Plastic bins are often stronger than cardboard boxes and can better protect your belongings. In addition, storing your items in plastic bins of a uniform size can make it easier to keep your items in tidy, easy-to-organize piles.

Organize Back to Front

Put the items that you use the least at the back and the most frequently used items at the front. This way, you'll have easy access to the items that you typically need, which will make future trips to your storage unit go more quickly.

Create "Zones" for Like Items

To further organize the items in your storage unit, put like items in the same location. For example, put all holiday decorations together in one section, all out of season clothes together in another section, and so on. Doing this will help ensure that when you go to retrieve a group of items (like your seasonal clothing), you'll be able to find everything you're looking for without leaving anything behind.

Make a Map

If you have a large storage unit, make a map of the space showing the location of each zone. This will help you remember what is in your storage unit and where.

Leave Walking Room in Your Unit

As you put everything back into your storage unit, leave walking room (aisles) among the bins. Even a narrow strip down the middle of the space will make it easier to navigate your unit.

When trying to decide whether to make one or two aisles in the unit and what configuration of aisles to use, remember to avoid any configuration wherein one layer of bins covers another. The aisle or aisles that you build into your storage unit should cut into your storage unit in such a way that every bin can be easily accessed from the aisles, without having to remove one bin to reach another.

Good luck! Once your storage unit has been reorganized, finding items in your storage unit should be easier and visiting the unit will be a more pleasant experience. For more information, consider contacting companies like King Arthur Self Storage.
